Ukraine has 6 cities in the top 1000 and is one of Eastern Europe’s best countries for setting up a startup.
Ukraine’s startup scene saw an increase in 2024 and jumped 3 spots from the previous year, outranking Latvia.
Notable Ukrainian startups such as People.ai, Grammarly, Gitlab, and Ahrefs have garnered massive user bases worldwide, underscoring the prowess of the country’s developers who are highly sought after by foreign entities for their expertise. The entrepreneurial spirit in Ukraine is evidenced by many developers opting to establish their own startups, even in the face of lucrative job offers.
Amidst the ongoing war, Ukrainian startup ecosystems are facing a unique challenge of unprecedented support from European nations, enabling Ukrainians to work abroad for extended periods. This support is crucial in the current circumstances, but it is hoped that post-war, the tech and IT talents will return home to bolster the Ukrainian startup ecosystems.
The war has also influenced the growth of security-related industries, prompting the Ukraine Startup Fund to back projects that cater to wartime needs and post-war modernization. Additionally, the Association of Startups of Ukraine has laid out a comprehensive strategy for 2024 aimed at fostering innovative startups within the country by providing access to expert knowledge, financing, and resources.
Support from the international business community is evident through initiatives such as Google’s Ukraine Support Fund, inclusion of targeted support in the EU’s Horizon Europe program, and Network VC’s establishment of a Special Venture Fund and Support Ukrainian Startups program. Prior to the conflict, efforts were made by the government and international organizations to recognize and nurture the potential of Ukrainian startups, with the establishment of Ukraine’s Startup Fund and the development of a Strategic Vision for 2025.
Ukraine may face challenges ahead, but there is hope that its startup ecosystems will emerge stronger. In adversity lies opportunity for innovation, and Ukraine is poised to leverage its resources to rebuild and revitalize its economy. Support from various stakeholders, coupled with strategic initiatives and programs, will be instrumental in propelling Ukrainian startups towards sustainable growth and success.
