Poland has 14 cities in the top 1000 and is one of Eastern Europe’s best countries for setting up a startup.
Since 2024, Poland lost 1 spot in the Global Startup Ecosystem Index, having now positioned itself as 34th worldwide.
Poland is recognized as one of the most populous countries in the EU, boasting a strong economy and an abundance of IT talent. Over time, the Polish public sector has shifted towards a more proactive approach by investing directly through the Polish Development Fund. This strategy has had a significant impact on the organic growth of the ecosystem, serving as a prime example of good intentions gone awry, a pattern seen in various European and Asian countries.
Despite previous challenges, recent signs of policy correction are promising, leading us to be optimistic about Poland’s potential to become a prominent European startup hub. Local venture capitalists are now co-investing in later funding rounds within Polish ecosystems, a change from their previous reluctance. Additionally, the influx of talented technical entrepreneurs from Ukraine has significantly enriched the Polish startup scene, a testament to the efficient utilization of external circumstances to acquire tech talent.
Efforts are underway to establish a more sustainable approach to startup ecosystem growth, with initiatives like PFR Ventures focusing on nurturing the local venture capital and private equity markets. The authorities in Poland are now prioritizing support for private sector enablers like accelerators and VCs, which is crucial for the future of the startup ecosystems in the country. City-level organizations, such as OMGKRK, play a pivotal role in empowering local startups by fostering collaboration among innovation, startups, technology, and IT professionals.
Major global corporations have taken notice of Poland’s potential, investing resources to bolster local ecosystem growth, exemplified by Google Campus in Warsaw and HubRaum in Krakow. The country has already produced notable success stories like DocPlanner, attracting more funding and attention to its startup ecosystems. In 2024, ElevenLabs achieved unicorn status, further solidifying Poland’s reputation as a burgeoning tech hub. The country is also witnessing a surge in startups incorporating AI into their solutions, demonstrated by Kontakt.io’s significant funding raise to boost AI development and expand to US hospitals.
Polish startups are increasingly looking towards global expansion, with the US being a popular destination. While EU membership presents opportunities, it also poses challenges as talented entrepreneurs may opt to relocate their startups to other member states. The Polish government has taken steps to attract foreign entrepreneurs through initiatives like the Startup Visa, but addressing labor policies to make hiring more affordable for startups remains a key priority. Implementing employee stock ownership plans could incentivize talent to choose startups over corporations, though regulatory gaps need to be addressed by the public sector.
The robust economic growth and talented entrepreneurs in Poland lay a solid foundation for thriving startup ecosystems. By fostering collaboration between private and public sector stakeholders, Poland has the potential to realize its aspirations in the startup landscape.
