With a population of over 200 million people (expected to reach 400 million by 2050), Nigeria, along with its capital Lagos, has emerged as a prominent hub for startups in Africa. The country leads Africa’s unicorn startup scene with companies like Flutterwave and OPay expanding rapidly across the region. Jumia Group, a Pan-African tech company providing e-commerce, logistics, and payment services, is also headquartered in Nigeria.
The public sector in Nigeria is beginning to recognize the immense potential of startups in driving the country’s economic transformation. The Nigerian Startup Act is designed to empower entrepreneurs through a legal and institutional framework for the growth of Nigerian startups. Initiatives such as the Startup Nigeria incubator and the Co-Creation Hub are working towards nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit in the country. Additionally, organizations like Lagos Angel Network, Growth Capital Fund, Ventures Platform, and Greenhouse Capital offer funding support to local startups. The FATE Foundation, a non-profit organization, provides aspiring entrepreneurs with training, mentoring, and advisory services to help them launch and expand their businesses.

With ambitions in the space industry, Nigeria, backed by NigComSat’s 2024 accelerator program, has selected 20 promising spacetech startups for intensive mentorship and growth opportunities.
Despite facing challenges such as limited financing options, low purchasing power, and disconnected local ecosystems, Nigeria is garnering international acclaim for its entrepreneurial success stories. The country has the potential to solidify Lagos’ status as a premier regional hub. However, the government should address infrastructure deficiencies and bolster smaller ecosystems to guide talented Nigerian entrepreneurs towards success.
