Egypt has 2 cities in the top 1000 and is one of Northern Africa’s best countries for setting up a startup.
Egypt’s startup scene saw an increase in 2024 and jumped 1 spot from the previous year, outranking Bahrain.
Egypt’s startup ecosystem is one of the strongest in North Africa’s entrepreneurial scene. With a population exceeding 110 million people, Egypt offers a vast market with immense potential for startups and foreign companies. The country also boasts a pool of skilled and cost-effective talent, making it an attractive destination for entrepreneurs. In a significant milestone in 2023, Egypt welcomed its first unicorn startup, MNT-Halan, showcasing the growing success of the tech industry in the region.
In recent years, there has been a surge in entrepreneurship, VC funding, and favorable startup policies, positioning Egypt as a hotspot for investors. While a specific startup visa is yet to be introduced, obtaining citizenship through investment is a viable option. The emergence of tech incubators and global accelerators has fueled the growth of the tech sector, particularly in the realm of Ecommerce startups.
Egypt’s startup landscape is bolstered by numerous VC firms and governmental initiatives, such as Egypt Ventures, a government-supported VC fund aimed at nurturing technology-based startups. Additionally, the latest fintech fund, supported by Egypt’s major banks and Global Ventures, is set to inject more capital into the country’s tech sector. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has also launched CREATIVA Innovation Hubs at public universities to foster innovation, collaboration, and digital transformation solutions.
To further enhance its entrepreneurial ecosystem, Egypt should focus on promoting an entrepreneurial mindset and streamlining regulatory processes. While there has been a rise in startups participating in accelerator and incubator programs, efforts to encourage more female founders and address the male-dominated hi-tech ecosystem are essential. The public sector must continue to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles and implement reforms to support the growth of startups.
With a strong business culture and improving internet infrastructure, Egypt’s startup ecosystem serves as a vital economic engine for the nation. As the country continues to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship, we anticipate the emergence of more groundbreaking startups from Egypt.
